Clean up your yard. Remove any edible debris that is attracting rats, such as fallen fruit and spoiled vegetables. Do this every day. If you have trees with fruit growing on them, buy a broad circular piece of metal and place it around the tree a few feet up from the base. This will help keep the rats from climbing the tree for food.

2
Secure any garbage cans you have in your yard. Rats have basically the same diet has humans, so anything you throw away is potentially attracting rats to your yard. Rats can be attracted to compost piles as well; secure your compost so rats cannot enter. Avoid composting meats. If you cannot secure your compost, you may need to start composting only yard and lawn waste.

Set bait traps if prevention methods fail. There are hundreds of varieties of rat traps on the market, but make sure you purchase one that won't trap other wild animals. Place traps in the most problematic areas of your yard. In combination with the steps above, this will help remove the rat problem.
