How to Create a Virtual Desktop

Virtual desktop applications allow the user to manage multiple, independent desktops within the Windows interface. These desktops are preserved off the screen and are usually accessible from the Windows system tray or through a standalone application. It is also possible to configure virtual desktop managers to react to hotkey combinations that allow for quick and easy access to virtual desktops. By using virtual desktops, the user can easily segment desktops by work type to improve productivity, while maintaining an uncluttered desktop.

• Virtual desktop application (like Sysinternals Desktops or Microsoft PowerToys Virtual Desktop Manager)

Instructions

1. Download and install the virtual desktop software(see Resources).

2. Launch the virtual desktop software.

3. Configure the number of virtual desktops you will use.

4. Set the hotkey to move from one virtual desktop to another. This hotkey must be easy to remember as it will be used to easily change virtual desktops.

5. Configure the virtual desktop software to load on Windows start. This ensures that your virtual desktops are always available.

Tips & Warnings

• Some virtual desktop software allows you to configure different desktop backgrounds and desktop titles for each desktop making it easier to manage the various work spaces.
