How to Set the Time on Howard Miller Clocks

Howard Miller manufactures travel, wall, mantel and table clocks. They can chime, alarm and tell global time. Some have weather and maritime-related features and some can automatically adjust to daylight savings time. Some of the movements in the most expensive clocks are made in Germany by Kieninger. Howard Miller was founded in 1926 and are known today primarily for grandfather clocks.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the glass door if there is one and move the Chime Selection Lever out of the Auto position. The Chime Selection Lever is near the numeral three on the edge of the dial.

    • 2

Move the "Day/Night" lever to the strike position. That's all the way up. It's adjacent to the numeral nine on the edge of the dial.

    • 3

Move the minute hand counterclockwise until the hour and the minute hand are at the correct time. You don't have to wait for the quarter hour chimes to take place. It will synchronize with the chimes on its own.

    • 4

Close the clock face door and open the pendulum door.

    • 5

Start the clock. Place your hand on the right side of the pendulum and move the pendulum to the left.

    • 6

Release the pendulum and close the pendulum door.

    • 7

Operate the clock for two hours to synchronize the chimes.

    • 8

Regulate the timekeeping over six days. Check the time at the same time each day. If it is fast or slow turn the adjustment nut. Move the pendulum up or down by turning the adjustment nut. To slow the clock down, move the pendulum disk down by turning the adjustment nut to the left. Move it to the right to speed it up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't move the hour hand when setting the time, it will move with the minute hand.

  • One complete revolution of the adjustment nut equals approximately one half (1/2) minute fast or slow per day.
