Blood in clothing, especially white jeans, can be problematic being that blood is a protein and must be taken care of quickly. Some stain remover products claim to remove blood stains, but do not always work or may not be immediately available in your home. There is no need to panic--just attend to your white jeans quickly with some home remedies. These can remove blood stains and help make your jeans as good as new.
Things You'll Need
- Cold water
- White vinegar
- Concentrated detergent
- Soft scrubbing brush or toothbrush
Remove the white jeans that have the blood stain and quickly rinse them in cold water. Soak them in cold water for 45 minutes and then rise again. The clothing can be soaked overnight if stain is large. After soaking, the stain should be gone. Launder as normal. Do not use hot water, however, as it can set the stain. If you are unable to remove your jeans immediately, blot the blood stain with cold water and a washcloth to remove as much of the blood as possible. Once you get home, soak your jeans in cold water.
Soak the jeans in water mixed with white vinegar if soaking in cold water alone did not work. Add a 1/2 c of white vinegar to the cold water and leave the jeans in this solution for several hours. Change the solution every hour. Once the stain looks like it is completely gone, rinse the spot again with cold water and launder.
Rub stain with a small amount of highly concentrated liquid detergent if you are unable to get the stain out with cold water or if the blood has dried. Use a soft scrub brush or toothbrush. Do not use water at this time. Let the treatment set for 10 minutes. Rinse the stain in cold water and scrub the stain as you are rinsing under the water. Soak the jeans in cold water for 24 hours if the detergent does not remove the stain completely, changing the water every few hours.
Pour rubbing alcohol directly onto your white jeans if the stain still persists after soaking and scrubbing with detergent. Rinse jeans in cold water after letting the rubbing alcohol set for several minutes. The rubbing alcohol will not damage your white jeans and should fully remove the blood stain. If by chance this does not work, you can dab hydrogen peroxide onto the stain with a cotton ball as a last resort. You will be able to see the peroxide removing and bleaching the stain immediately. Rinse in cold water and launder as normal.
Tips & Warnings
- Do not use hot water.
- Change soaking water or vinegar-water solution frequently.
- Have jeans professionally cleaned if you are hesitant in removing stain.
- Use hydrogen peroxide only as a last resort as it can bleach clothing.
