How to Use Shiva Oil Sticks

Shiva Paintstiks look like large, round-tipped children's crayons. They are oil paints compressed into handheld cylinders that come in an array of both matte and iridescent colors. Unlike traditional oil paints, work done with Shiva Painstiks dries in about a day. This gives the artist some time to create without the worry that his or her artwork will get smudged while it sets.

Shiva Paintstiks never dry out. When left in the open air, they develop a dry, protective skin on the surface. This can always be peeled away to reveal the oil paint underneath. These paint sticks can be used like pastels or with a paintbrush on canvas, fabric or paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the rubber mat on a flat, stable surface and place your paper or fabric on top. Lay a stencil on top and position it as desired. Unwrap your paint sticks and wrap a paper towel around the top of each one you plan to use.

    • 2

Twist the paper towel over the tip of each paint stick, loosening the protective covering. Peel away the covering and discard. Rub a stencil brush against the tip of the stick in a circular motion.

    • 3

Pounce the stencil brush over the stencil in short, sharp movements, then swirl the paintbrush to blend in the color. Do not use the paint stick directly for the stencil. Globs of paint will distort the edges of your shapes. You can draw freehand with the paint sticks, as you would with a crayon.

    • 4

Rub some color from several paint sticks onto a paper plate. Use a paintbrush to mix these colors as you would regular oil paint to create original colors. Pounce these colors into a stencil, or brush them freehand onto paper or fabric.

    • 5

Smudge some color with a paint stick onto part of your picture. Use a paintbrush to spread the color around and add fine details. Use a second paint stick to draw lightly on top of the first color, again using a paintbrush to blend the two as desired.

    • 6

Switch or clean your brushes between each color change. Use turpentine in a metal container and swirl your paintbrushes in the liquid, then dry them thoroughly with old cloths. Allow your brushes to dry before use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tape down the corners of your stencils and fabric to avoid slippage.

  • After setting down some color, use your fingers to smudge and shade with the paint. Your body heat will create real-looking shadows.
