How to Calculate Surface Area of an Oval Pool

Calculation of the surface area for an oval pool is not as straightforward as for a rectangular one. An oval represents the geometrical shape called an ellipse, and its area needs to be determined using the mathematical constant "pi." If you know the pool's surface area, it is possible to estimate the volume of the pool and therefore the amount of water needed to fill it out.

        Use the mathematical constant number "pi" with the desired accuracy. Note that pi can be rounded to the third decimal point for the majority of calculations. Thus, for these purposes, pi = 3.142.

        Multiply the length by the width and the constant "pi." Then divide the product by four to calculate the surface area of the pool. In our example, the area is: (18.2 meter x 5.3 meter x 3.142) / 4 = 75.77 square meters.

        Multiply the area of the pool (in square meters) by the factor 10.7639104 to convert it to square feet. In our example, the area is 815.58 (75.77 x 10.7639104) square feet.

        Multiply the surface area of the pool (in square meters) by the average pool depth (in meters ) and then by 1,000 to compute the pool's volume (capacity). If the depth is 1.8 meters then, in our example, the pool's water volume comes to 75.77 x 1.8 x 1,000 or 136,386 liters.
