How to Consolidate iTunes

Apple's iTunes has a convenient, easy to use interface that has rapidly made it the most popular program for managing all of your music, video, and media files. If you've been using the program for several years, you may have acquired a sizable media library that could be taking up most of the space on your computer. Apple provides a quick way of dealing with this. By simply consolidating your iTunes library, you can safely move all of your media files to another computer or to an external hard drive and free up disc space on your own computer.

Instructions

      Open the iTunes program on your computer. Go to "Preferences" in the main menu at the top of iTunes. In the pop-up Preferences window, select the "Advanced" button.

      Select the checkbox for "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" and click the "OK" button.

      Go back up to "Preferences" in the main menu and select "Advanced" again. Select "Change" and choose the location on your external hard drive or on your computer where you want to create your new music library. Click "Open." Click the "OK" button to close the Preferences window.

      Go to "File" in the iTunes main menu and scroll down to "Library." Click "Consolidate Library." In the pop-up message that asks to confirm your actions, click "Consolidate." The iTunes program will now consolidate your media library and copy it to the location you selected.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you have finished consolidating your iTunes library, go to your original iTunes music folder location and delete the folder. This will free disc space on your computer.
