How to Iron a Taekwondo Uniform

A taekwondo uniform should always be clean and pressed. This is especially important during belt testing and promotion ceremonies. A freshly pressed uniform shows respect for your martial art, school and instructors. Since most taekwondo uniforms have patches, it is important to iron the uniform in a particular way so that you do not damage them.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the taekwondo uniform before ironing. Do not dry it. Take it immediately to the ironing board while it is damp. This will help you press the taekwondo uniform efficiently, and the ironing will dry it at the same time.

    • 2

Set your iron on the cotton setting. This is the second hottest setting on most irons. Allow the iron to heat up completely. If the iron allows you to fill it with water, do this before heating it up. This will provide steam as you iron. You can also use a spray bottle to moisturize the taekwondo uniform, if needed to remove wrinkles.

    • 3

Iron the taekwondo pants first. Lay the pants flat with the front facing up. Run the iron from the waist band down toward the leg cuffs on each leg. Turn the pants over and iron the same way on the back of the pant legs. The crease of the pants should be along the sides of the legs. The fronts and the backs should be pressed flat.

    • 4

Press the lapel of the taekwondo uniform top. The lapel will be a thicker piece of material running from one side of the uniform, all the way around to the other side. Pressing the lapel can be done in one motion by moving the iron around the edge of the taekwondo uniform. The lapel should be crisply pressed.

    • 5

Lay the arms of the taekwondo uniform out sideways. If the taekwondo uniform has patches on the sleeves, make sure that they are lying flat on the ironing board. Iron the sleeves with the patches facing up. Do not fold the patches as you iron.

    • 6

Iron the back of the taekwondo uniform. This is the one part that should not have patches on it. If there is a decal on the back of the taekwondo uniform, be careful not to burn it off with the iron. Press out all the wrinkles.

    • 7

Finish ironing the taekwondo uniform by pressing the front. Lay each lapel flat on the ironing board with the patches facing up. Carefully iron in the direction of the lapels and from the top to the bottom. Make sure that the patches are not loose and are not folded. The front of the taekwondo uniform is the most important part, so make sure that there are no wrinkles there.
