1
Remove the hardware from the cabinet doors (knobs, handles, and decorative pieces). Simply use an appropriately sized screwdriver to remove these pieces.
-
2
Set the hardware aside. A good idea is to place the hardware in individual cups or bags so as not to get the pieces mixed up.
-
-
3
Place the painter's tape on the walls around the cabinet. The tape should be placed directly beside the edge of the cabinets.
-
4
Spread the painter's drop cloth on the floor around the cabinets. Additional clothes may be needed to cover counters, sinks and appliances.
-
5
Remove the cabinet doors from the cabinets. The method of doing this will vary depending on the cabinet setup. In general, you will need to use a screwdriver to unscrew the hinges on which the door hangs.
-
6
Sand any exposed wood. Use the fine sandpaper and lightly sand the wood.
-
7
Clean the cabinets using warm water and a sponge.
-
8
Pour the primer into the rolling tray.
-
9
Apply primer to the cabinets. Larger areas, such as the cabinet doors, can be covered using a roller. Roll the roller through the primer in the rolling tray and glide it over the surface of the cabinet. Use a brush for the smaller areas, such as the thin side of the door and the areas near the painter's tape. Allow the primer to completely dry before applying the second coat (about 1 hour, depending on the brand of primer used).
-
10
Pour the paint into the second rolling tray.
-
11
Apply paint to the cabinets using the same method described for the primer.
-
12
Determine whether or not a second coat of paint is necessary. Allow the first coat to dry. If there are any areas where the primer is showing through, you should add a second coat. If the paint looks thick and even, you do not need a second coat.
-
13
Reattach the cabinet doors to the cabinets by reconnecting the hinges.
-
14
Replace the cabinet hardware.

Tips & Warnings
When painting, always move with the grain of the wood. In most cases, this means painting in a vertical manner, not allowing the brush or roller to move horizontally.
Make sure the room is well ventilated by opening windows or doors.
To avoid chipping the new paint, wait approximately two weeks before cleaning the cabinets again.
