How to Remove a Canker Sore

Canker sores are small, white ulcers that are present inside the mouth. Sometimes called aphthous ulcers, canker sores typically present as single sores but do occasionally form clusters. Canker sores run their course in four to 14 days but are very painful and can prevent sufferers from eating and participating in other daily activities.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply over-the-counter topical medications such as Orajel to the area, following package directions. If you have never had canker sores before or are unsure what might work best for you, consult your doctor for a recommendation. The right medications will dissipate pain and prevent further damage to the area.

    • 2

Add an L-lysine supplement to your diet for the duration of the outbreak. L-lysine is an essential amino acid that promotes tissue health and can speed the healing of canker sores. Some doctors recommend that people who suffer frequent canker sores take 500 mg of L-lysine daily to help control the occurrence of sores.

    • 3

Take steps to improve your immune system. A strong immune system is better able to handle many ailments, including canker sores. Take C and B vitamins. Reduce stress. Be sure to get seven to eight hours of sleep each night.

    • 4

Rinse your mouth with a mixture of salt, baking soda and warm water. This rinse helps keep your mouth clean without using alcohol or other irritants that may prolong a canker sore outbreak.

    • 5

Avoid acidic or spicy foods that may further irritate the sensitive mouth tissue. One key to quickly healing canker sores is to avoid further aggravation of the tender mouth tissue near the sore.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your canker sore lasts longer than three weeks, be sure to see your doctor. Prolonged outbreaks may indicate a more serious condition.
