How to Install a Billet Bolt Over a Grill

Billet grilles have been popular additions to trucks and cars since the mid 1990s, but until recently, they required special tools for a decent installation. Inexperienced builders would often end up with jagged-cut grille shells and horrible fit and finish, and have to replace everything just to get it back to stock. Recently, a few companies have started to manufacture bolt-over billet grilles, designed to bolt over the factory grille shell, requiring no cutting at all.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood to the vehicle using the hood pop and lift it all the way up. You want to have good access to the grille shell to do this job.

    • 2

Unwrap the billet grille insert and install the supplied threaded inserts into the back of the grille using your hands. You'll be tightening these in later, so hand tight is fine for now.

    • 3

Slide the billet grille insert into the vehicle's grille shell, making sure you align it properly so it doesn't damage the finish or scratch any of the panel. Make sure the threaded studs go through the openings in the stock grille shell.

    • 4

Hold the billet insert in place on the stock grille using your hand or hips, and then slide the flat brackets that come with the kit over the threaded studs. These brackets are long and flat, and designed to clamp the grille to the factory grille shell. Loosely thread the lock nut provided with the billet grille kit onto the threaded stud, and make sure the bracket is clamping against the grille shell.

    • 5

Tighten down the lock nuts using the open-end wrench set. Make sure the brackets are clamping properly, as they should be holding the insert in place. When everything is tightened down, shut the hood.
