How to Use a Nail Puller

A variety of construction and carpentry jobs require you to tear down a wood structure. In the process, you will need to remove nails. You could do it with a hammer, but a better option is to use a nail puller. Nail pullers are easy to use and allow you to remove nails without damaging the wood, so that if the wood is not rotten, you can re-use it. Instructions

    • 1

      Remove any unusable cover or overlay on the wood structure, such as shingles or plaster, using a crowbar and hammer. Ensure the wood structure is exposed completely so nail removal with the nail puller is optimal.

      Slide the V-notch of the nail puller flush against the head of the nail.

      Push the handle of the nail puller away from the nail to remove the nail.

      If you cannot get the nail puller under the nail head, slide the V-notch of the nail puller flush against the head of the nail and then tap the bottom, backside of the nail puller toward the nail head with a hammer. The hammer forces the nail head in between the V-notch of the nail puller so the nail can be pulled out.
