How to Train a Bloodhound Puppy to Sit

According to Sue Ruff of the American Bloodhound Club, bloodhounds can be gentle and loving pets with a stubborn streak that requires time and patience to overcome. Known as scent hounds, bloodhounds have traditionally been bred to find other animals and people through their well-developed sense of smell. A large breed dog with great strength, the modern bloodhound is descended from dogs bred by a 7th century French monk named St. Hubert (the patron saint of hunters) who kept the animals as hunting dogs. Bloodhound puppies are intelligent and energetic and will often use their nose to sniff out trouble. They have been known to eat anything that smells interesting and can climb and dig their way out of a fence. Training should begin immediately once your new bloodhound puppy is home and acclimated to his surroundings.

Instructions

  1. Training

    • 1

Hold a food treat in your hand directly in front of your puppy's nose.

    • 2

Move your hand over his head so that he follows the treat with his eyes and raises his entire head.

    • 3

Push the puppy's bottom gently into the sitting position with your other hand as you say, "Sit."

    • 4

Give him the treat and reward him with verbal praise.

    • 5

Repeat the training steps for ten minutes, three to four times a day.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always use a firm, but loving approach with your puppy. If he jumps up to get the treat, gently push him down with a firm "no" and try again. Don't let him have the treat until he sits on cue. Synchronize the "sit" command with his motion of sitting and only say it once during each separate attempt.

  • Punishing your puppy when he doesn't obey will only make him fearful and possibly aggressive as he ages. If you get frustrated during training, take a day off and remember puppies are like infants; it takes time, patience and kindness to affect any permanent behavioral changes.
