How to Make a Mulled Pomegranate Cocktail

Mulled pomegranate cocktails provide a new twist to traditional mulled wine, which is a popular holiday party beverage. Indeed, adding pomegranate liqueur and fresh mint adds complexity and sophistication to this holiday classic. Using raw, natural honey is a key component of this recipe because it helps bind the pomegranate liqueur with the other ingredients. This recipe serves six, but it is easily doubled or tripled for large groups. Mulled pomegranate cocktails can be easily prepared the night before a holiday soiree since it can be warmed up quickly before serving.

Things You'll Need

• ½ cup pomegranate liqueur
• 2 Meyer lemons, thinly sliced
• 1 lime, thinly sliced
• 1 Valencia orange, thinly sliced
• 1 sprig fresh mint
• ¼ tsp. freshly ground nutmeg
• 2 whole cinnamon sticks, plus more as needed for garnish
• ¾ cup natural sugar
• 1/8 cup raw honey
• 750 ml. Merlot

Instructions

1. Combine the pomegranate liqueur, sliced lemons, lime, orange and fresh mint in a large saucepan. Heat over low heat for 12 to 15 minutes.

2. Remove and discard the mint sprig. Add the freshly ground nutmeg and cinnamon sticks to the saucepan. Heat for an additional seven to nine minutes on low heat.

3. Remove and discard the cinnamon sticks. Add the sugar, honey and Merlot. Heat on low heat for eight to 10 minutes, being careful not to boil the liquid.

4. Pour the contents of the saucepan through a strainer into a clean saucepan. Return the full saucepan to the stove and heat until the mulled wine is warm.

5. Transfer the cocktail to individual serving glasses and garnish with a cinnamon stick. Serve while hot.
