How to Calculate the Mid Point of a Salary Range

One of the most common rules about a person's salary is that it's always commensurate with that person's experience. That being said, it usually means that a person with a moderate amount of experience at a job is likely to get a salary at the middle of the range for that job. It can also be used to compare the differences between salary widths.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the lowest and highest points of the salary range. Let's assume our lowest salary is $50,000, and our highest salary is $100,000.

    • 2

Add the lowest and highest points of the salary together. In our case, you should get $150,000.

    • 3

Divide the number by 2. You should get the number $75,000. This is the mid point between the the two points of the salary range.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the midpoint to determine whether you deserve more money in the form of a raise or a better job or not.

  • Don't get too cocky. Your boss might not believe you deserve such a high salary. On the flip side, however, don't sell yourself short either. The mid point is merely an indicator of the middle line, not a sign of success.
