How to Make Beef Chow Mein

You can make your own beef chow mein at home for less then half the cost of going out to a Chinese restaurant. A flank steak or flatiron steak is a good choice for the meat portion of your dish. Does this Spark an idea?

  • 1 pound beef, cut into thin strips
  • 3 cups celery
  • 1 cup onion
  • 6-ounce can mushrooms
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 10 ounces chicken broth
  • 1/4 cup light soy sauce
  • 5 cups water chestnuts

      In a deep skillet, brown the beef strips in 1 teaspoon of oil. Remove the meat from the pan. Add another teaspoon of oil and cook the celery and onions until they are crisp but tender. You can also add chopped green peppers, thin sliced cabbage and fresh mushrooms when you stir fry the vegetables in this step.

      Blend the cornstarch into the water. When it is smooth, add the chicken broth and soy sauce.

      Put the beef back into the pan with the veggies and add the bean sprouts and water chestnuts. Pour the sauce over everything and heat thoroughly. Serve over chow mein noodles with steamed rice or fried rice and a side of your choose.
