Cheerleaders are an important part of most collegiate sports. From their cheers and pyramids to their pompoms and megaphones, cheerleaders often are one of the most visible aspects of a collegiate program. In Texas, many schools recognize the importance of cheerleaders and offer scholarships to qualified participants in the program.

Blinn College

Located in Brenham,Texas, Blinn College offers 16 scholarships for cheerleaders as well as one for the Buccaneers’ mascot. Squad members also earn physical education credits. Uniforms, travel and accommodations also are provided for cheerleaders.

Midwestern State University

Located in Wichita Falls, MSU awards scholarships of $400-$600 at the end of each semester. Tryouts are held each September. Requirements include attendance at all football games, home soccer, volleyball and basketball games as well as playoff games. Attendance also is required at certain service and philanthropic events. The university provides uniforms and per diem travel expenses.

Navarro College, located in Corsicana, is home to a seven-time national championship cheerleading squad. As of 2010, Navarro offers 20 scholarships of $1,350 each semester to be used for housing. Tryouts are held in April, and approximately 18 men and 12 women are selected. The cheerleading coach maintains control over whether and to whom scholarships are awarded.

Ranger College

The Southern Belles of Ranger College is comprised of both male and female cheerleaders who perform at basketball games as well as with the dance team in parades and other special events. As of 2010, each member of the squad receives $625 per semester as long as they maintain at least 12 hours each semester. Each member also receives an hour of P.E. credit.

Tarleton State University

The Texan cheerleaders, located in Stephenville, are awarded scholarships as well as two hours of P.E. credit. Out-of-state tuition waivers are also available. Squad members perform at all home athletic events, some away contests and at pep rallies and civic events. Tryouts are held each May.

West Texas A&M University

Located near the scenic Palo Duro Canyon area, WTAMU offers its cheer squad members scholarships based on a staggered system, beginning with $200 for the first year and ending at $500, as of 2010. Squad members are required to cheer at home football, volleyball and basketball games as well as coach a summer clinic and judge area junior and high school tryouts.
