The government recently provided millions of dollars to Housing Authorities around the country to help provide housing to low income families seeking affordable housing. The monies are also being used for housing authorities to administer homeownership programs, self sufficiency programs and Housing Choice Voucher or Section 8 programs. If you're unemployed and seeking work, this is a great time to learn how to obtain employment in the Public Housing industry.

  1. Step 1

    Public housing is housing that is offered to individuals and families who are considered low income. These housing opportunities are made available through funding by the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. For more information regarding public housing, visit www.hud.gov.

  2. Step 2

    You can work in the public housing industry as a business contractor if you have expertise in construction work, maintenance, HVAC certification, housing inspection certification, or building and development of multifamily housing or single family residential units. Contact your local housing authority to see how you can bid on public housing contracts and make sure you inquire about their Section 3 program policy or requirements.

    You can also become an employee of the Housing Authority by applying for public housing positions that are posted on Housing organization websites such as NAHRO, the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Organization www.nahro.org, or PHADA (Public Housing Authority Directors Association) www.phada.org. Check out the job description requirements and start networking with your local housing authority board members and directors by attending the public board meetings.

    Familiarize yourself with federal regulations of housing through reading all regulations posted within the Code of regulations on CFR 24 Housing and Urban Development. These regulations are available through http://www.gpoaccess.gov/CFR click on browse and search regulations. Take online courses available through organizations such as Nan McKay University, NAHRO seminars and/or HTVN (housing televideo network). The HUD website offers employment opportunities as well. See how you can become certified in public housing management, housing inspection, or Section 8 (Housing Choice Voucher) Management certification. Other employment opportunities such as a Program Manager or Coordinator usually requires expertise in Human Services and/or a Housing Counseling certification.

  5. Step 5

    Call or visit your local housing authority by getting an updated Housing Authority phone number, address, or website through www.hud.gov and search under "Public Housing Authority contact listing". If you are currently a contractor and need assistance putting together a bid proposal to submit to your local housing authority or local government feel free to go to www.crossconsultant.com .

Tips & Warnings
  • Take college courses or have a college degree from an accredited college in the area of urban planning and development, public administration, Human Services and/or business and political science
  • It is helpful to have certifications and/or licenses in urban planning, real estate, public housing, finance, housing counseling, human services, community relations
  • It is helpful to network and get recommendations from community reinvestment Act organizations and local human service and housing non profit agencies and local government officials
  • Get your Housing authority local board meeting schedules and agendas to stay abreast of what is going on at your local agency
  • Be ready to play politics
  • Treat everyone nice at the Public housing authority, you never know who influences the decision making from the receptionist to the maintenance staff
  • Be persistent and know which HUD office is responsible for oversight of the local housing authority. Note, some authorities are called commissions.
