How to Use a Finger Toothbrush for Cats

Brushing your cat's teeth can become a time your feline friend actually begins to enjoy. Providing good oral care for your cat will mean your cat is healthier, may have a longer life and that you will save money in veterinary expenses. Using a finger toothbrush designed for a cat is often the easiest way to clean your cat's teeth. The finger toothbrush fits over your finger and does not have a handle. You can buy a finger toothbrush and cat toothpaste at a pet store or from your veterinarian.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the finger toothbrush over your index finger, and put a little cat toothpaste on it.

    • 2

Using your other hand, gently lift your cat's upper lip.

    • 3

Place the finger toothbrush on your cat's teeth at a 45-degree angle to the gum line.

    • 4

Move your finger, and the brush, back and forth.

    • 5

Brush only the outside of the teeth. The cat's tongue will keep the inside of the teeth relatively clean.

    • 6

Give your cat a treat to reward her for her good behavior while having her teeth cleaned.

    • 7

Repeat this process each day for optimal results.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be calm and positive about brushing your cat's teeth. Cats quickly pick up on human emotions and if you're nervous about the process, you cat will be, too. Start out slowly and for short sessions.

  • To further increase your cat's dental health, ask your veterinarian about foods and treats that are specially designed to clean tarter from your cat's teeth.

  • Do not use human toothpaste for your cat. These products may upset your cat's stomach and will not have a taste that appeals to your cat. In some instances, the ingredients in these products may be toxic to your cat.
