How to Tell If Contact Lenses Are Right Side Up

If you wear contact lenses, you may inadvertently turn them inside out during cleaning or handling. If you place the lens in your eye while it is inverted, you will likely feel discomfort. You should always check your lenses for damage or stuck-on particles before placing them in your eyes. You can quickly check your contacts to make sure they are right side up while you are inspecting them for other problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and dry your hands well.

    • 2

Remove a contact lens from the case (or from your eye if you suspect it is inside out) for inspection. Hold it at the tip of your finger and notice the appearance of the edges. If the edges go straight up or curl in to make a bowl shape, the lens is right side up. If the edges of the lens flare out, it is inside out.

    • 3

Pinch the lens together to see if it is right side up. If it folds with the edges curled in, it is right side up, according to the Cleveland Clinic. If it flares out and sticks to your fingers, it is inside out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take your contact lenses out properly to prevent them from becoming inverted. Pull your lower eyelid down with your middle finger, drag the lens down to the white of your eye and gently pinch the lens with your thumb and index finger to remove it.

  • If your contacts are not inverted but you still feel discomfort when wearing them, consult your eye doctor.
