How to Put a Hole in a Wooden Desk Without Splintering the Wood
A wooden work desk makes a great place for getting homework or leftover work done in your home or shop. Most wooden desks do not come with predrilled holes for a cord or any other item you want to run through them. If you just drill a hole through the desk, you will most likely create splinters of wood around the drilled hole and make your desk look bad. The reason it creates splinters is because the veneer particle board cover is made of many particles and splinters just because it isn't solid. You can avoid unsightly splinters easily with a few steps. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Pencil
- Steel pipe the size of hole you are drilling
- Leather gloves
- Handheld propane torch
- Drill
- Drill bit the size of hole you want
- Safety goggles
Instructions

1
Draw a circle the size of the hole you want at the certain location you want on the wooden desk.
-
2
Light the propane torch. While wearing heavy gloves, grab the steel pipe the size of hole you are drilling with your other hand. Hold the flame a half-inch away from the end of the pipe. Circularly heat around the end of the pipe until it is red hot.

-
3
Firmly press the pipe against the circle you drew on the surface of the wooden desk. After slightly pressing the pipe against the surface of the wood for three seconds, rotate the pipe in place to burn through the particle surface of the wooden desk.
-
4
Remove the pipe after a minute of rotating it in place on the desk. You will now have a burned circular mark on the desk that will allow for a clean drilling without wood splintering.
-
5
Insert the drill bit into the drill. Put on safety goggles. Drill out the hole you have a burned circle around on your wooden desk.
