How to Replace a Loofah or a Sponge to Avoid Skin Rashes
Loofahs are hard, fibrous gourds used for exfoliation, or sloughing off the top layer of dead skin cells to keep the skin fresh and more able to absorb moisture. Exfoliation can reduce the signs of wrinkles and prevent acne. However, bacteria buildup is a common problem with loofahs, and using a contaminated loofah could cause a rash or an infection. According to a study in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, the loofah can support the growth of many bacterial species. Bleaching will decontaminate the loofah, but you still should replace a loofah every few months. In addition, some people cannot use a loofah because of sensitive skin or dermatological problems. There are ways to replace an old loofah sponge, as well as alternatives to loofahs in your bath routine.

If you are considering replacing your loofah because you have developed skin irritation or a rash, the loofah might not be to blame. If you have changed soaps or detergents recently, your skin could be irritated. Try going back to your old soap or detergent before replacing your loofah.

2
Inspect your loofah. Does it look worn? A mildewy smell is an indication of bacterial growth. If it's really bad, toss the loofah and replace it with a clean, dry loofah. In some cases, the loofah might just need to be disinfected by soaking in a solution of 1 cup bleach to 1 gallon water for 15 minutes. Shake off the excess water, and hang to dry completely.

Prevent bacteria on a new loofah by keeping it outside the shower when not in use; allow it to hang freely so it will dry out completely between uses. This combined with a bleach disinfection at least once a month should extend the life of your new loofah sponge.

4
Stop using the loofah if you have acne and exfoliating is painful to you. While exfoliating with a loofah is a great way to prevent acne, the rough fibers will irritate an acne breakout.

5
If you cannot use the loofah because of acne, use a soft washcloth and a mild soap. Bar soap works well because it dries the skin. Astringents are also great for reducing the oils that cause acne.

6
Discard contaminated loofahs carefully. Disinfect your contaminated loofah with a bleach water solution before throwing it away; in order to prevent the bacteria from growing in your garbage can and maybe spreading to other areas.
