Instructions

    • 1

Remove all clothing, shoes and personal items from the closet. Measure your working space again to ensure the correct fittings. This is the time to remove any nails or tacks from the walls and flooring. If replacing the current paneling, pry nails from the wood carefully or use a hammer to knock out the old walls.

    • 2

Cover the flooring with a plastic tarp, take out the current fixtures and place aside. Remove any varnish or polish from the wood using sandpaper, wipe down the freshly sanded wall with a damp cloth and then go over with a dry one, to ensure all dust particles are gone. Apply either a new coat of varnish or paint. Allow the walls to dry thoroughly according to the instructions on the can before continuing.

    • 3

Measure from the bottom of the closet up, take a pencil and mark the walls where you are adding closet rods and the new shelving. Run the measuring tape beginning at one end down to the other. Halfway between the two ends, place the level on a small piece of board and hold up against the wall; the level should be equal on both sides. Finish marking and checking any new holes and placements.

    • 4

Install any shelving brackets beginning at the bottom of the closet. Place the bracket on the wall, then drill each screw, placing the head on the pencil mark. Once all shelf brackets have been installed, install the closet bracket rods. Cover any additional holes or damage with spackle and touch up with paint.

    • 5

Clean and put away all materials other than storage boxes and hooks; add these where wanted. Place the shelves and the closet rods in their brackets.

Tips & Warnings

  • Marking drill spots beforehand with pencil will help to keep shelving and rods even. Wear safety glasses and gloves when working with power tools. Keep the area well-ventilated by opening a window in the room and having a fan facing outward to pull the air through.

  • Remember to watch how you swing the hammer when removing the old wall or hanging a new wall, as these can cause serious damage to the walls.
