How to Make a Trellis for Peas

Peas need support in order to yield their full potential. They are a vine-like plant with tentacle-like structures that will wrap onto nearby supporting materials. Lacking self-supporting capabilities, they will fall to the ground as they grow taller if they have nothing to hold. For the home gardener, the best option is to make a trellis for peas. Simple and inexpensive to make, a pea trellis will give you a better crop of peas. Does this Spark an idea?

    • 1

Cut two 2-by-2 boards to four feet in length. Saw the bottoms off each at an angle to make a pointed end. Drive the boards into the ground about a foot. Each board should be about six feet apart.

    • 2

Cut two 2-by-2 boards to six feet in length. Screw one board to the top of the vertical boards. Screw the remaining board to the bottom of the vertical boards. You should now have four boards that make a rectangle.

    • 3

Starting at the top of the vertical boards, make a mark every 10 inches down the length of the board. Do the same for the horizontal boards. At each mark, hammer a nail about 3/4 of the way into the board.

    • 4

Tie a string to the nail closest to the bottom of the vertical board. Pull the string to the bottom nail of the other vertical board. Wrap the string around the nail, and then pull the string to the nail directly above that nail. Wrap the string around the nail, and pull it across horizontally to the other vertical board. Repeat this process until you reach the last nail on the vertical boards. Cut the string and tie off on that nail. You will now have numerous horizontal strings running from each vertical board.

    • 5

Tie a string to the first nail on the top board. Drop the string down toward the bottom board and cut it off at the ground. Weave the string in between each of the horizontal strings and tie off at the nail on the bottom board. Repeat this process with each subsequent vertical string until you have created a net pattern.

Plant your peas per their instructions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Move your crop of peas around from year to year. Planting in the same spot can lead to low yields in consecutive years.
