How to Connect a Garden Hose to a Dehumidifer

Most dehumidifiers come with two options for draining the water. They can either use the internal storage tank that will turn the dehumidifier off when the tank is full by use of a float switch, or they can be connected up to drain to an external drain. Use of the internal tank is more convenient, as it allows more variability in the placement of the dehumidifier. However, if you have access to a floor drain, it is preferable to connect a garden hose to a dehumidifier and drain through that. Does this Spark an idea?

Figure out where you want to position your dehumidifier. Look for a floor drain close by. The floor drain has to be at the same level or below the bottom of the dehumidifier. Water cannot drain up.

    • 2

Locate a knockout on the back of your dehumidifier and remove it. This is where your water will drain out of. If possible, point the back of the dehumidifier toward the floor drain to prevent kinks in the hose.

    • 3

Your dehumidifier came with an extension piece for an external drain setup. Find this piece and connect it into the back of the dehumidifier through the knockout. It should just push right in.

Connect a garden hose up to the threaded end of the extension piece. The female end of the garden hose should screw on to the extension piece. Run the hose out to the drain and ensure it's not kinked or crushed.

    • 5

Zip-tie the garden hose to your floor drain to prevent it from being kicked away and causing water damage to your floor.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your drain is higher than the dehumidifier and you still want to drain externally, it is possible by installing a condensate pump. This will pump the water to a higher drain.

  • Ensure that the dehumidifier is installed on a level surface. This will allow it to drain properly.

  • When screwing the garden hose on to the external drain piece, verify the garden hose has a washer in the female end. If this is not present and the hose is connected, water will leak out of the connection.

  • Clogged or kinked drain hoses may result in the dehumidifier overflowing and causing water damage to your floor.
