How to Register a Kindle 2

You have a Kindle, one of Amazon's newest wireless reading devices. If you bought the Kindle 2 for yourself, then Amazon.com already has registered you. If you received the Kindle 2 as a gift, you will need to register your machine in order to purchase and download books, articles and other content. Follow these quick steps, and you are on your way to selecting and reading your personal library.

    Instructions

Turn on the machine. The Kindle 2's power button is located on the top of the machine beside the headphones jack. Simply slide the button to the side, and the screen should light up.

      • 2

Press the "Home" button. The "Home" button is the first button from the top on the right-hand side of the front of the machine. You can see a diagram of the Kindle on Amazon.com's Kindle troubleshooting page. The home page is the first page you will see after you turn on your Kindle.

Next, press the "Menu" button. The "Menu" button is the third button from the top on the right-hand side of the front of the machine. Check to make sure wireless, or "Whispernet," is turned on also. Whispernet is a technology that allows you to "wirelessly search, discover, and download content on the go. Your books are delivered via Whispernet, typically in less than 60 seconds," according to Amazon.com.

Use the five-way button to navigate down to "Settings," then press the button straight down to select "Settings." The five-way button is "like a joystick," according to Amazon.com's "Kindle Quick-Start" video. You can move the five-way button up, down, left and right and then press the button straight down to select categories and access different pages on your Kindle 2. The five-way button is located just to the right of the keyboard.

Press the five-way button again to select "Register." Now, enter your Amazon.com user name and password using the keyboard to the left of the five-way button. A reminder: Your Amazon.com user name is your e-mail address.

      • 6

Use the five-way button again to select "submit." You are registered. Amazon.com also offers this alternative: You can register or cancel your registration -- the latter for instances when you give your Kindle 2 to someone else or don't have it in your possession anymore -- by accessing the "Manage Your Kindle" page at http://www.amazon.com/manageyourkindle."

    Tips & Warnings

    • Amazon.com's Kindle 2 troubleshooting page recommends pressing the "Symbol" key, a button that gives you a menu of symbols and punctuation marks, by moving the five-way button if your "Amazon user name or password contains characters not present on the Kindle keyboard."
