If you're a disabled veteran, you have two possible sources of benefits: the Veterans Administration, or VA, and Social Security. To qualify for VA benefits, your disability must be the result of injuries due to military service, while Social Security benefits are available to all Americans. Both organizations have precise rules about what type of disabilities qualify for benefits. Most VA claims are filed when the veteran leaves active duty through resignation, discharge or retirement, but either type of claim can be filed at any time.

1. File an application for disability benefits with the Social Security Administration, or SSA, by going to their website. You'll be able to submit both the Application for Social Security Disability Benefits and the Adult Disability and Work History Report there.
