How to Teach Children Their Address & Phone Number
One of the biggest challenges of parenting is keeping your child safe, and the thought of anything happening to him can be terrifying. By teaching your child his address and phone number, you are helping your child to take charge of his own safety. If there is an accident and you are unable to call for help, your child will be able to. If your child is lost, he will be able to tell a police officer where he lives. If your child is away from home and needs you, he will be able to call you. The Safer Child website says children are capable of learning their home phone number and address as young as three years old, but it's up to you to make sure he learns this information as well as possible.

Teaching Your Child Their Address and Phone Number
-
1
Explain why it's important to know. Explain to your child why learning their address and phone number is an important skill. Often, children have a difficult time remembering information they believe to be useless. If you demonstrate to your child that learning his address and phone number can be a valuable tool for his safety, he'll be more likely to want to learn and remember it.

2
Write it down. Write down the information on an index card and tape it in a place your child will see it frequently. A bathroom mirror or a refrigerator door are both good places.

3
Read it out loud. Go over the card with your child if he is too young to read. Have him practice saying it with you a few times.
-
4
Practice daily. Go over your address and phone number daily with your child until he can recite it by heart. You can even practice while at a friend's house by having your child try to call your house. Ask him whether he remembers the number and see if he can dial by himself.
