How to Condition a Cutting Board
A cutting board, also known as a chopping board, is used for cutting or chopping vegetables, herbs, meats and other foods. A cutting board is usually made out of wood and should be conditioned before use, and periodically thereafter, to help protect and preserve the wood. If the wood is not properly maintained, the cutting board can become cracked, weak and infested with bacteria. Proper conditioning helps prevent the growth of bacteria, and it also prevents mold growth, staining and the absorption of food odors. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Pour approximately 2/3 cup of mineral oil into a glass bowl and add 1 tbsp. of either paraffin or beeswax to the bowl. Mineral oil is very inexpensive and can be purchased at a local department store. Paraffin can be purchased at just about any grocery store, usually in the canning section, and also at many craft stores.

Set the bowl in the microwave and heat the mixture, just until the wax is melted, roughly 30 seconds to a minute. Use a clean cloth or oven mitt to remove the bowl from the microwave while being careful not to burn yourself.

Apply the warm mixture to the cutting board with a clean cloth. Thoroughly coat the board. Let the cutting board sit for a couple of hours or until the mixture soaks in.

4
Repeat this process on a daily basis during the first week and once per month thereafter for the life of the board. A conditioned cutting board should last for many years if it is cared for properly.
