How to Set Up a Tiki Torch
Tiki torches come in three basic types: post-mounted, table top and mounted. Post-mounted torches are the most popular, as you stick them in the ground and can remove and rearrange them as you wish. Table top torches simply sit on a flat surface, while mounted torches are permanently installed to surfaces such as deck railings, fence posts or a concrete foundation in the ground. A tiki torch is a fun way to add ambiance to an outdoor party, but you should take care to maintain safety. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Choose an outdoor location for your tiki torch. Make sure that it is in a safe area, away from trees or flammable substances. Place the torch in an area where people will not trip over or run into it.
-
2
Clear the ground of all debris, including dead leaves and loose dirt, for a radius of 10 inches from where you plan to set up the tiki torch. Insert the torch firmly into solid ground until it is standing on its own. It should not wobble and should remain standing upright when lightly bumped.

-
3
Stamp the ground around the base of the torch with the heel of your shoe. The soil surrounding the post should be compact, not loose.
-
4
Remove the fuel reservoir from the tiki torch and fill it with the appropriate fuel source, usually tiki torch oil. Take care not to overfill it and replace the reservoir into the tiki torch when finished.
-
5
Give the fuel a few minutes to soak into the wick. Uncover the wick and light it with a match or lighter.

6
Keep watch. Do not leave a lit tiki torch unattended. If you are going inside for the evening, extinguish the flame.

Tips & Warnings
If you are setting up multiple tiki torches, consider using them to line a pathway. This has the dual effect of lighting the path for guests as well as creating a decorative, tropical feel.
If installing a mounted torch to a wooden railing, use a power drill and make sure the wooden foundation is not crumbling or warped.
When using a table top tiki torch, place it in the center of the table, where it is least likely to be knocked off.
Keep a fire extinguisher close to hand in the event that a tiki torch lights something on fire. Water will not be the most effective way of extinguishing a flame and is likely to make the situation worse.
