How to Install the Spark Control Module in a Corvette

The Chevrolet Corvette has incorporated a ignition module, which is also referred to as a spark control module, since the late 1960s. The ignition control modules control the spark of the ignition coil and proper sequence of firing. A failed ignition module will not permit a car to start; failures can occur due to damage, heat or moisture. Ignition modules and their installation vary based on year; consult a manual specific to your year for more detailed information.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal using a wrench.

    • 2

Remove the distributor cap using a Torx screwdriver to remove the two screws. Lift the cap off after removal of the two screws.

    • 3

Mark the position of the rotor using the chalk. Remove the screw holding the rotor in place and pull the rotor straight up.

    • 4

Remove the ignition module by removing the two screws with a small socket. Disconnect the two wiring connectors from the module. One will be on each end of the module. Be gentle when removing the connectors as they may be brittle from exposure to heat from the engine.

    • 5

Spread the silicone grease evenly over the area where the new ignition module will be installed. Place the new ignition control module in the greased area. Reinstall the two screws holding the module in place. Reconnect each of the two wire connectors to the module.

    • 6

Press the rotor back on the distributor using the chalk marks for guidance. Insert and tighten the screw holding the rotor in place.

    • 7

Place the distributor cap back on the distributor and tighten down with the two Torx screws. Reconnect the battery terminal and start the engine.

Tips & Warnings

  • A pickup magnet is useful for retrieving any of the screws that may be dropped in the top of the engine bay.
