How to Clean a Pottery Barn Shag Rug

Pottery Barn shag rugs are made of wool yarn with a backing consisting of cotton canvas and synthetic latex. These rugs are maintained in the same way as most area rugs you might have in your home. Spills need to be cleaned up immediately to prevent staining and wet spots should be dried thoroughly to prevent mold or mildew from forming on the rug. While spot cleaning and regular vacuuming can be done at home, Pottery Barn recommends that you have your shag rug cleaned professionally when it becomes noticeably dirty. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Blot any spills with a clean white cloth immediately to remove the spot and prevent staining. If the spill was water or a clear substance, use a hair dryer to quickly dry the front and bag of the shag rug.

    • 2

Sprinkle baking soda directly onto the spill if the spill consists of a colored soft drink, juice or alcohol. Allow the baking soda to rest on the spill for a few minutes to absorb the liquid.

    • 3

Vacuum the rug thoroughly to remove the baking soda and any other dirt. Shag rugs have long thick fibers so you may need to go over the rug several times with the vacuum to remove all of the dirt trapped in the rug.

    • 4

Gently wipe the stain with a damp towel until it disappears. If this is not effective, try wetting the towel with carbonated water or club soda and wiping the stain.

    • 5

Take the shag rug to a professional rug cleaner if the stain persists.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use harsh cleaners such as bleach or ammonia on your shag rug. These chemicals could damage the rug.
