How to Remove Greasy Food Stains From Acrylic Fabrics

Almost anyone who has ever sat down to eat a meal can remember spilling some food on their clothing. Some fabrics are easier to remove stains from than other fabrics are. Acrylic fabric is one of a group of durable synthetic fibers, but in spite of acrylic's durability it stains easily when greasy food is involved. The fibers of acrylic fabric attract oil stains that can be removed if treated quickly--but often remain permanent if not caught before the dryer's heat creates a permanent bond between the greasy food stain and the synthetic fibers. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place a layer of absorbent cloths or paper towels on your work surface and set the fabric stained-side down on the pad.

    • 2

Spray aerosol petroleum-based laundry pre-treatment solution directly on the stain. Fold another piece of absorbent fabric or a paper towel and use the corner to rub gently inward using tiny strokes. Do not rub the solution in a side-to-side or outward motion because this can make the stain larger. Work inward all of the way around the stain.

    • 3

Pick up the acrylic fabric and move the stain over--it needs to be placed on a clean spot on the pad. Repeat step 2. The spot should now be smaller and harder to see.

    • 4

Pour liquid detergent into the measuring cap that comes on the bottle, then pour enough detergent from the cap to thoroughly cover any remaining food stain.

    • 5

Rub the detergent into the fabric with your hands and pour the rest of the cap full of detergent into the washing machine. Wash the fabric according to label directions--using the hottest water possible.

    • 6

Before drying the fabric, check to see whether the stain has been completely removed. The stain can become permanent after being exposed to the heat of the dryer. If the stain is still, there repeat step 5.

Tips & Warnings

  • Treat greasy food stains as quickly as possible to prevent permanent staining.
