How to Steer a Manual Pallet Jack

Make turns effectively with loaded or empty pallet jacks. The turning radius of the wheels under the handle is 180 degrees to allow pallet loading, maneuvering and placement in tight spaces. Proper steering precautions will prevent accidents and tipping during transport.

A pallet truck increases material handling productivity by allowing a single worker to lift and transport loads weighing hundreds of pounds.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear the appropriate protective work gear for material handling. Put on steel toe work shoes and eye protection to transport stock through a warehouse, laboratory, factory or store.

    • 2

Center the load on the forks to avoid tipping on turns. Lift the wheels only as high as necessary to allow free rolling. One or two inches is enough clearance for transport on level surfaces.

    • 3

Secure the load to the forks of the pallet jack. Wrap tape, bungee cords or banding around the load and the forks.

    • 4

Set the lift lever on "neutral" after raising the loaded pallet. That takes the weight off the handle pump hydraulic lift for easy maneuvering.

    • 5

Steer in the direction of the turn when pulling, but in the opposite direction when pushing. The turning wheels under the handle are in front of the load while pulling, and behind it when pushing.

    • 6

Get a helper to work as a spotter when transporting a tall load. This avoids collisions with forklifts and fast moving co-workers at intersections.

    • 7

Make turns slowly to avoid tipping when carrying loads. Ask a helper to support one side for greater turning stability.

Tips & Warnings

  • Push a loaded pallet jack rather than pull one. The strain of pushing is considerably less than pulling.

  • Never play with material handling equipment. Do not allow co-workers to ride on the forks.

  • Always ask for help with any load that weighs more than you can carry comfortably on a pallet truck.
