How to Use American Express Gift Checks As Payments
American Express Gift Cheques (checks) can be used as legal payment tender just about anywhere you travel. They don't expire and are much more secure than cash since they can be replaced if they are ever lost or stolen. Because of this security, many individuals carry them when traveling and use the checks as payment for purchases. To use the checks for purchases is quite simple. You just have to follow the proper protocol.

1
Sign your American Express gift check in the upper lefthand corner as soon as you receive it as a gift. Once your signature is on the check, no one can use the check in your stead unless they can duplicate your signature.
-
2
Write the name of the person or business you are making a payment to on the gift check. The name should be printed in the "Pay To The Order Of" field.
-
3
Write the date the payment is being made by completing the "Date" field.
-
4
Sign the back of your American Express gift check in the bottom lefthand corner. The signature should be made in the presence of the person you are making the payment to. Your signature should match the signature you placed in the upper lefthand corner of the check when you first received it. If your signatures don't match, it can cause problems with your payment.

5
Advise the payment recipient to contact the American Express Travelers Cheque Customer Service Center at (800) 525-7641 if you encounter problems submitting your check as payment tender.
-
6
Wait for the person or business to give you back your change if the entire amount of the check is not needed for payment. For example, if your payment is $20.00 and your American Express gift check is $25.00, you will receive $5.00 cash back.
