How to Add Weight to Hold Helium Balloons Down

Helium balloons have a tendency to float around aimlessly or disappear into the sky unless they are properly anchored using balloon weights. Whether intended for use at a party or just a prized gift to a child, keeping balloons anchored means that they can be enjoyed for as long as the helium holds inside the balloon. While you can purchase expensive balloon weights in party supply stores, creating weights at home is simple and inexpensive.

Things You'll Need

• Helium balloons
• Curling ribbon
• Scissors
• Empty balloons
• Sand
• Funnel

Instructions

1. Hold an empty balloon in one hand and insert the end of the funnel into the opening with the other hand. Push the funnel in far enough that it fits tightly into the mouth of the balloon.

2. Pour sand into the funnel, slowly filling the balloon. When the sand reaches the balloon's neck, remove the funnel and tie a knot in the neck of the balloon.

3. Knot one end of your curling ribbon around the neck of the sand-filled balloon and the other end around the neck of the helium-inflated balloon.

4. Curl any ribbon tails using your scissors to help add a polished look to your balloon weights. To do this, pinch the ribbon between the open scissor blade and your thumb, and then press firmly as you drag the length of the ribbon between your hand and the blade.
