How to Make Your Own Wireless Internet Extender

Wireless routers have become ubiquitous in households to provide Internet access to any desktop computer or laptop in the home. Expensive routers often boast additional wireless range that cannot be matched by cheaper routers. But with a few household materials, you can construct a parabolic wireless internet extender that can substantially increase the range of even inexpensive routers.

  • Thin cardboard
  • Scissors

      Cut a thin piece of cardboard---like poster board---into a rectangle measuring roughly 6 inches by 8 inches. Larger rectangles with more surface area will extend the wireless signal even further, but will take up more space on your router.

      Affix a sheet of aluminum foil to one side of your cardboard rectangle with your glue stick.

      Cut an additional piece of cardboard in a circle with a diameter of 8 inches. If you decided to make your parabola larger or smaller, your circle's diameter should be the same as the longest edge of your rectangle.

      Cut two semicircles of approximately 1 inch in diameter out from two opposite sides of your larger circle.

      Fold a ½-inch lip around the circumference of your circle.

      With the missing semicircles of your larger circle on the right and left sides, curl the top and bottom of the circle toward each other to make a taco shape. Affix the lips of your circle to the foil-covered side of the rectangle, bending the rectangle in slightly so that the entire surface of the lip is affixed.

      Poke a small hole in the top and bottom of the taco-shaped circle of cardboard.

      Slide the antenna of your wireless router through the two holes that you made so that the antenna is inside the curve of the large rectangle.

      If your wireless router has two antennae, make a second parabolic extender to attach to the second antenna.
