How to Make Homemade Raver Beads
Wild, all-night dance parties featuring electronic music have been around since the disco clubs of the 1970s, but it wasn't until the 1980s and 1990s that these dance parties became known as "raves." Raves are characterized by electronic music, light shows, artistic performances and passionate, nearly ecstatic, dancing. Many people use the rave experience to create feelings of friendship and harmony by wearing and giving away "kandy"---brightly colored, beaded jewelry. Since the purpose of wearing kandy beads to a rave is to give them away, these instructions will help you make between 8 and 12 bracelets, more than enough to wear and share.
Things You'll Need
- 1 spool of .7mm-1mm clear stretch bead and jewelry cord
- 1 large package of neon plastic pony beads (480 count)
- 1 package of plastic alphabet beads
- Scissors
- Clear nail polish
Instructions
-
Measure out your materials.
-
1
Measure your wrist. Add 1.5 inches to this measurement to allow for the knot.
-
2
Cut at least eight lengths of stretch cord to this measurement.
-
-
3
Each bracelet will require around 50 plastic pony beads. Select the beads you wish to use for each bracelet and arrange them in the desired pattern.
Make your bracelet.
-
4
Pick up one of your lengths of stretch cord. Tie one bead securely onto the end of the cord. This will ensure the rest of your beads do not fall off as you string them.
-
5
String the rest of the beads onto the cord.
-
6
Hold the two ends together and tie a double knot. Dab the knot with clear nail polish to secure it further, and then trim the ends.

Many ravers like to use alphabet beads to add words or short phrases to their kandy bracelets, which can make them more personal and memorable. You can choose words that reflect a personal mantra, such as "Peace" or "Free," use your nickname, or make up a funny phrase like "Jazz Feet" or "Crunch Patty."
