Conduct your research. Full name, birth date and date of death (if applicable) are needed for each person on the tree. Standard family trees span five or six generations. Do not worry if you cannot fill every spot on the tree. However, you can research beyond the information you know by interviewing family and analyzing various family and legal records.

Decide the type of tree you will be creating. Pedigree and fan charts are commonly used. Wallchart versions of these are available for purchase through a variety of sources. Create a rough draft of your family tree. Paternal information, which comes from the father's side, is arranged above maternal information, the mother's side. Maiden names are used for females.
