Having recently gone through the process there are a few things I wish I had known before I started. Continue reading for some very useful steps to take in the months BEFORE you file.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • LOTS of paperwork from your financial life!
  1. Step 1

Here is a list of bills you will need to start collecting. You will likely need a six month record of each item if possible:
All utilities - water, gas, cell, land line, cable, internet, electricity and others you might have.
All monthly bills like mortgage, auto loans, any other outstanding loans.
You will need the original contracts on all loans, including mortgage and auto loans.

  2. Step 2

A list of income in the form of:
6 months of pay stubs, and four years of income tax returns.
Any other source of income you have. rental property or money that is owed to you with 6 months records.
Also, if you are suing someone or someone is suing you, that paper work is needed.

  3. Step 3

The most recent statements you have from any creditor you are including in your bankruptcy filing. I saved them as they came along, replacing the older ones with the newest ones that arrived. just the most recent ones should be good enough.

  4. Step 4

As for your autos, you are entitled to keep one vehicle for every licensed driver in the home. You will need to give the milage on the odometer. I needed all this and I wasn't even including the autos in my filing. I think they want to know that we aren't driving around in escalades while we file for bankruptcy.

  5. Step 5

If you have been divorced within the last 8 years they will want to see the papers.
Also, you will need bank statements for every account you have open that has your name on it, and also, every account you have CLOSED within the last six months.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get a binder with dividers and start organizing everything. Trust me, you'r day at the attorneys office will be so much more pleasant if you come in prepared!
  • DO NOT try to take out cash advances on credit cards you will be filing on. Also, DO NOT go on a spending spree and buy that 46 inch LCD HD TV.
