How to Become a Plus-Size Model

How to Become a Plus-Size Modelthumbnail
Work out to tone your plus-size curves.

Modeling is a very competitive field. While some modeling agencies specialize in representing plus-size models, and other general modeling agencies may offer plus-size divisions, competition can still be fierce. Typically, plus-size models should be at least 5 feet 8 inches tall, though certain agencies may require models be at least 5 feet 10 inches tall. Depending on the agency or market you are looking to work in, plus sizes generally start at size 8. Models are typically expected to have no or few tattoos.

Move to or near a major metropolitan area. Most modeling business is conducted in and around large cities such as Manhattan, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago. If you live very far from a metro area, you may be unable to make auditions and casting calls, which will make you an undesirable candidate to book for future modeling jobs. Conversely, living within a reasonable distance will ensure that your agent or employer can depend on you to make it on time to a photo shoot.

Consult with a physical fitness trainer to develop a healthy diet and workout regimen that is tailored for your body type. Make it clear that you do not want to lose weight or your curves, but instead want overall toning while maintaining your plus-size figure. Depending on what type of modeling job you land, you may be asked to model swimwear or lingerie, and a toned plus-size body will make you a more attractive candidate for the job.

Book an appointment with a photographer to have head and body photographs taken. Head shots, also known as ZED cards or composite cards, are a vital tool for your foray into the modeling world since they introduce your face and information to agents and prospective employers. According to fashion photographer Joe Edelman, many modeling agencies "will not even meet with you until you have your comp card done -- because that is the tool that they use to market you." A composite card typically has your picture on one side and a short resume on the back that includes your name, contact information, height, weight and body measurements. Organize your full-length body and head shots in a binder that you can use as a portfolio to show to agents and employers.

Attend modeling agency open casting calls for plus-size models. These calls are open to anyone in the general public who thinks she has what it takes to make it in the modeling world. Be prepared to bring your portfolio with you to the call, and do not wear heavy makeup, since modeling agents need to assess your natural beauty and how they can play it up with their own makeup and lighting techniques. Scan your local newspaper or magazine listings for open casting calls, or contact agencies that represent plus-size models and inquire whether they have any open calls coming up.

Enter modeling contests in your area. These may be held at hotels or shopping malls and can be a good way to get your foot in the door. Come prepared with your portfolio and wear well-fitting clothing and light makeup; avoid very high heels, since modeling scouts need to assess your real height. Also enter your head shots in any plus-size modeling contests held by national or regional magazines.
