Step 1
Take heart! If your skin is normally clear, the chance of your acne lasting throughout your term is slim, and you should see some natural improvement during the second and third trimesters. However, you may wish to ease the discomfort with a safe acne treatment during pregnancy.
-
Step 2
When you are pregnant you should be cautious with all medications, including the ones that are safe normally. Acne treatment during pregnancy should ideally focus on externally applied creams and lotions rather than pills or tablets which are swallowed. Try to avoid buying over-the-counter pills during pregnancy.
-
Step 3
Medications to avoid in the treatment of acne during pregnancy include isotretinoin. The brand name of this treatment is Accutane, and it is a powerful medication which can cause birth defects if taken whilst pregnant. If you were taking this treatment before pregnancy you should stop immediately on discovering that you are pregnant and contact your doctor. In most cases this will not happen, as it is advised that whilst taking isotretinoin you use two methods of birth control and your doctor should test you for pregnancy every month you are taking it.
-
Step 4
There are several safe ways to get rid of acne with treatment during pregnancy. Clindomycin (brand name Cleocin) is an antibiotic which is available as a topical acne treatment (topical meaning you apply it to the area rather than swallowing it).
-
Step 5
Azelaic Acid is another topical cream (brands include Azelex, Finacea and Finevin) used in the treatment of moderate acne and is considered to be safe for use during pregnancy. This treatment and the one at point 4 above are considered unlikely to harm an unborn child.

Step 6
If you'd prefer a more natural way to get rid of acne with treatment during pregnancy then consider herbal or homoeopathic remedies. However, do not assume that just because a product or treatment is 'herbal' or 'natural' it means it is safe. Some herbal remedies are very powerful and should be taken with care.
