How to Remove Wrinkles From Existing Carpet

Save

Carpet wrinkles are a problem that every home owner faces at some point if they keep carpet for long enough. Carpet wrinkles occur when the fabric of the carpet is stretched over time, such as through use and vacuuming, and thus excess fabric bunches up to cause wrinkles. Unfortunately, the only way to remove carpet wrinkles is to pull up the carpet and cut out the excess carpet fabric. However, this isn' t as hard as it sounds; it can be accomplished in a single afternoon.

Things You'll Need

  • Power stretcher
  • Knee kicker
  • Carpet cutter or box cutter
  • Brace one end of the power stretcher firmly against the baseboard of one wall that runs the length of the room. If the room is square, pick any side to start.

  • Place the opposite end of the power stretcher down on the floor as far as it will go and press down on the lever located on top of it. You will feel the carpet stretch slightly. Hold for 20 to 30 seconds. Then move forward to do the next section of the carpet. Work in 18-inch increments until you reach the other side of the room.

  • Use the knee kicker to stretch the final section of the carpet up against the opposite wall. Place the metal end of the knee kicker firmly against the baseboard of the wall and hit the black rubber section with your knee.

  • Go to one of the walls that runs the width of the room and brace one end of the power stretcher firmly against the baseboard of the wall. Stretch the carpet to the opposite side of the room using the same method as before.

  • Use the knee kicker to stretch the final section of the carpet up against the opposite wall.

  • Use the carpet cutter or box cutter to remove the excess carpet by cutting along the baseboard between the wall and the floor. Make sure to cut around the entire baseboard.

  • Firmly press down the edges of the carpet all around the room to secure the carpet to the floor and press it under the baseboard or tack strip.
