Whenever you need to clean your washing machine's tubs thoroughly or you need access to the transmission, the tub will have to be removed. The tub, or drum, consists of an inner basket inside an outer tub. They connect to each other at the top by a tub ring. To remove the drum from a Whirlpool washing machine, you will need to remove the washer cabinet.
Things You'll Need
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver
- Socket wrench set with extensions
- Spanner wrench
Disconnect the power cord of the Whirlpool washing machine from the wall outlet. Pull the washer away from the wall and turn the water supply spigots off at the wall. Place a bucket under the area where the water supply hoses connect to the back of the washer.
Take the water supply hoses off of the rear of the washer by twisting the hose connectors counterclockwise. It may be necessary to loosen the connections using a pair of pliers. Set the ends of the water supply hoses in the bucket.
Remove the two screws that secure the control console to the top of the washing machine with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Flip the control console back and let it rest on the back hinge. Remove the door switch wiring harness on the top rear of the washer by pulling it apart with your fingers.
Insert the blade of a flathead screwdriver into the brass clips on the top rear of the washer. Push the screwdriver handle toward the back wall and pop the clips out of the washer top. Grab the washer cabinet on both sides with your hands and lift the cabinet away from the washer base.
Pop of the top of the agitator. Inside the agitator is a debris cap with a plastic handle. Grab the handle and twist while lifting the debris cap out of the agitator. Use a socket wrench with an extension to remove the agitator bolt in the center of the agitator. Grab the bottom of the agitator with both hands and lift the agitator out of the tub.
Press down with one hand on the tub cover directly over a tub cover clip. Unsnap the clip using your free hand. Continue pressing down on the tub cover and releasing the clips until all the clips are free. Lift the tub cover off of the tub assembly.
Use a spanner wrench to remove the nut in the middle of the tub. Pull the inner tub out of the outer tub. There are three screws that secure the outer tub to the tub braces. Use a socket wrench to remove the screws and lift the tub out of the washing machine.
