How to Design an Outdoor Grill Area

If your outdoor grill area is lacking, a redesign of the area is in order. Whether you envision a small area just for the grill or a massive outdoor kitchen with a built-in barbecue, planning the project before you begin is essential. A detailed budget and building plan keeps the project on track without a lot of unexpected bumps in the road. Soon you can invite your friends over and fire up the grill for a backyard barbecue celebration.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Stakes
  • Decide on a location for the grill area. Choose a location that is close enough to the house for convenience but not so close it causes a fire hazard.

  • Measure the amount of space available for the grill area. Consider any overhanging trees or shrubbery that might interfere with grilling.

  • Make a sketch of the area, including any landscaping features such as pools, patios or planting beds. Add in the measurements on the sketch.

  • Determine what you want in the outdoor grilling area. Consider the type of grill you have or want to purchase. Decide if you will just have the grill or if you will add counter space and other outdoor kitchen accessories.

  • Draw each item on the sketch with the approximate measurements. Go outside and measure out the proposed elements of the barbecue area. Mark them with stakes. Test the flow of the area, ensuring there is still enough room for other backyard activities.

  • Choose a material to place under the grilling area. A concrete slab, tile, brick pavers or flagstone are common choices. You'll want an even surface for the grilling area.

  • Consider the current amount of lighting available in the area. Determine if more lighting is needed and where the lighting will go. Consider the available sources of electricity.

  • Decide if you will add a cover to the area. A pergola, patio umbrella or awning are possibilities to protect the area from sun, rain and other weather conditions.
