Instructions

    • 1

Choose a pineapple from the store that is ripe, but not too ripe. It must have green, healthy leaves on the stem and cannot have any mold.

    • 2

Cut the stem of the pineapple right where it is attached. Take off any fruit that may remain. Trim the bottom of the stem, making small horizontal cuts, until you can see root buds, which are small dots around the perimeter of the bottom of the stem. Strip the leaves for about 3/4 of an inch from the base of the stem to increase rooting chances.

    • 3

Place the stem upside down in a cool, dry area for about a week so that the cut end can heal before planting. If you skip this step, the plant may rot before it even has a chance to root.

    • 4

Place a layer of coarse gravel in the bottom of a 12-inch pot with drainage holes. Place potting soil on top of that, mixing in some organic compost for enrichment.

    • 5

Plant the stripped section of the pineapple stem into the soil. Pat down the soil around the plant firmly, establishing support for the stem.

    • 6

Water the plant once a week, simply to keep the soil moist. The pineapple does need a lot of water to grow and will actually weaken with too much water. Place it in a window with maximum sun exposure.
