How to Create a Calendar Template on Excel

Microsoft Excel is a popular and versatile spreadsheet program that efficiently manages, sorts and filters large amounts of data. Although Excel's original use was for calculating and manipulating numbers, it has quickly expanded its purpose to suit a wide range of needs. Excel's easy to use automating and filtering tools make it an ideal program for creating a calendar to manage projects, dates, events and other important information.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Microsoft Excel. Go to "File" in the main menu and select "New Workbook." Go back to "File" and choose "Page Setup." In the "Orientation" section, choose "Landscape" and click "OK."

    • 2

Leave the first row blank. In the second row, enter the days of the week, typing each day into a separate column. Use your mouse to select all of the cells that you just typed into. Go to "Format" in the main menu and select "Cells." Click the "Alignment" tab and select "Center" for both the "Horizontal" and "Vertical" alignments. Go to the "Font" tab and select a bold font that is easy to read. Click "OK" to close the formatting window.

    • 3

Click any cell in the first row. Type in "=TODAY()". This allows Excel to automatically enter the current date. Select the cell and go to "Format" in the main menu and choose "Cells." In the "Numbers" tab, select the format you want to use to display the month. Click "OK."

    • 4

Select all of the cells in the first row that are above the weekdays. Click the "Merge and Center" button located in the toolbar at the top of Excel. Your month should now be displayed as a properly centered title.

    • 5

Go to the "Sunday" column and select the cells in rows 3 thorough 8. Click the "Merge and Center" button. This will create one cell that is an appropriate size for one day in your calendar.

    • 6

With the large cell still highlighted, copy it by clicking Ctrl and C (or Cmd and C on a Mac). Select the cell in the third row of the next column. Click Ctrl and V (or Cmd and V on a Mac) to paste the large cell into the Monday column. Continue to paste the large cell into each of the weekday columns. Once the row is finished, continue pasting for an additional four rows.

    • 7

Starting from the weekday cells in row 2, select all of the cells in your calendar. Go to "Format" in the main menu and select "Cells." Choose the "Borders" tab and click the "Grid" option.

    • 8

Enter the days of the month into each appropriate cell in your Excel calendar.

    • 9

Go to "File" in the main menu and select "Save As." Choose a location on your computer where you would like to save your calendar template. In the "Format" drop-down menu, select "Excel Template." Click "Save."

Tips & Warnings

  • Another great way to manage all of your calendars in one place is to use each sheet in an Excel workbook as a separate monthly calendar. In a new Excel workbook, create 12 separate monthly calendars, each on a separate sheet. Rename the sheet tab to the month name so that you can easily access the information for that month. Save the workbook with a file name that contains the current year.
