How to Clean & Shine Cement Floors

Cement floors are found in many garage and basement areas. They are also becoming popular as a flooring option in other areas of the home as well. Cement is a highly durable element, resistant to most stains and other elements. Cleaning and shining the cement floors requires just a few cleaning ingredients that are most likely already on hand in the home. Good retail products are available, but a homemade solution will have the same result.

Things You'll Need

  • Bucket
  • Mop
  • Water
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Dish detergent
  • Pour a gallon of warm water into a cleaning bucket.

  • Add 1/4 cup of liquid dish detergent to the bucket, which will clean and shine the floors.

  • Pour in 1 cup of distilled white vinegar, which will disinfectant the cement floors.

  • Dip a mop in the solution.

  • Wring out excess water out of the mop.

  • Clean the floors with the damp mop, focusing especially on areas with heavy residue.

  • Sprinkle a thick layer of baking soda over any stains that are not removed by the mopping. If necessary, moisten the baking soda with water from a spray bottle. Let it sit for an hour.

  • Mop over the areas of baking soda once more to collect the baking soda, along with any residue that has been pulled out of the cement.
