Instructions

    • 1

Comb your hair thoroughly. Make sure it is straight and smooth. Spritz it with water, if need be, to create a more sleek look, as well as making it more pliable. But don't over saturate or soak your hair.

    • 2

Use the hair tie to make a ponytail. Place the ponytail about where you want the hair bun to lie. For a more elegant look, have it lower on the back of your head, near the nape of the neck for a more casual look or for a just-around-the-house style, position it higher. The style is up to you.

    • 3

Twist your ponytail. Once the ponytail has been formed, hold it at the end of the ponytail, and twist so that the ponytail becomes more compact and slimmer.

    • 4

Twist the slim ponytail around the hairband. This will take some time to learn, so practice. Once you get it, it's fairly easy. Take your ponytail, and, starting at the base, start twisting it around the hair tie in a clockwise motion so that it creates a bun or coil shape (like a cinnamon roll, if you will).

    • 5

Insert the bobby pins into your hair as you coil it. Push them from the outside into the center of the bun, creating a securing lock of the various layers of the bun. This will ensure that your bun will stay in place and tight. After you've completely coiled the hair, place a couple more pins about 45 degrees apart from one another (or at the very least, in three key positions--2 o'clock, 6 o'clock, and 10 o'clock from the outside), angled toward the center.

    • 6

Spray with hairspray to ensure that the bun stays secure, and that you won't experience strands of hair freeing themselves from the bun if you don't want them to.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't be shy with the bobby pins. You can never use too many if you feel they are necessary. Use bobby pins that match the color of the hair so that they don't stand out too much.

  • There are many styles to making a hair bun, so enjoy experimenting. You can do one on each side like Star Wars' Princess Leia if you'd like, or put the bun on top of your head and add a royal hair bun crown if you'd like, or some other such accessory. Have fun with it.
