Mix equal parts baking soda and water in the small dish to make a paste. Start with 1 tbsp. of each ingredient and make more if you need it.

Dip your toothbrush into the mixture so that the bristles of the brush have a generous amount of baking soda paste on them.

Use the toothbrush to brush your teeth in the normal fashion. Pay special attention to the front teeth that are most visible when you smile. Work the baking soda paste in on all tooth surfaces and allow it to sit for a minute or two.

Rinse your toothbrush off and put it away. Rinse your mouth with cool water to remove all remnants of baking soda from your teeth and mouth.

When you mix baking soda with water, the paste is able to penetrate into teeth to lighten stains that may exist. Baking soda is more effective at whitening teeth with yellowish and brownish stains than teeth that have grayish stains. Baking soda is also effective at neutralizing bacteria on your teeth. Often bacteria are the root of stains on teeth. Baking soda also neutralizes acids that can eat away at tooth enamel.
If you experience irritation on your gums after brushing with a baking soda paste, discontinue using the baking soda.
